About the Homeless Leadership Coalition
Central Oregon has long recognized the need for a more coordinated and informed response to homelessness and people living in poverty. Since the late 90's, the Central Oregon Homeless Leadership Coalition has been tackling this challenging and often dynamic problem.
The Homeless Leadership Coalition (HLC) consists of more than 40 organizations and individuals from Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson Counties. They include the faith community, shelter providers, public schools, public health, emergency services, veterans outreach, public safety, metal health, housing services, public services, private employers, workforce development organizations, and others. They represent a diverse group of interests, unified by a common focus.
The HLC has grown to provide key support for major community events, such as the One Night Homeless Count (ONHC), Project Connect (formerly known as Project Homeless Connect), the Severe Cold Weather Emergency Shelter Plan (STEPS), and the 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness. Participation in the HLC is open to anyone in the Tri-County area. Every month, this group comes together to discuss current issues, plan and coordinate annual events, and become more informed by special presentations. To carry out the work, the HCLC relies on community involvement, participation of churches and the faith community, and individuals who have a heart for the issues surrounding homelessness and poverty. Please join us at an upcoming meeting. They are held at the Bend Public Library on the 1st Friday of the month from 8:00 to 9:30am. You can also contact the Co-Chairs of the HLC, Racheal Egan Baker or Sarah Elliott, for more information.
2010 One-Day Homeless Count Data Now Available
The Homeless Leadership Coalition has released the data collected from the annual homeless count, conducted Thursday, January 28, 2010. On this day, 2,402 individuals self-identified as homeless persons within the tri-county region, seven percent more than in 2009. Two out of three self-identified homeless persons came from families with children. Unemployment increased five percent as a cause of homelessness amongst these households.
