i. BEND AREA HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - Sheila

ii. BEND’S COMMUNITY CENTER – Taffy Gleason (this month’s 1st presentation)

2. Services include:
a. Becca’s Closet
b. Feed The Hungry
i. Need $75,000 to qualify for matching grants to remodel the kitchen.
ii. Current kitchen is 25 years old and safety is an issue.
c. Underground Thrift Store
i. They are moving and expanding the thrift store.
ii. New location is the old Alpine Glass building.
iii. Will open July 19th.
iv. Voucher System:
1. Any social service agency or church can be in the system so that their needy clients can get all items for free.
v. Not yet able to pick up donated items.
1. Working on the truck piece.
d. Job Training for at risk youth and adults.
i. New thrift store location/expansion adds 20 new job training slots.
ii. 12 week kitchen job training program for homeless and low income youth and adults.
1. Food handler’s license and training
2. Working with restaurants to put them directly into job openings.
3. Barriers are Transportation, Lodging and Child Care.
e. Showers (15-20 people a day use this service)
i. They need volunteers to man showers so they can have showers open more, such as early morning, before work.
f. Essential supplies
i. 200-300 tents given out each year.
ii. Firewood, propane, candles. ( A fat candle in a coffee can may raise the temperature in the tent by 15 degrees.)

2. Simple and effective service model.
a. Transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing.

ii. Emergency Shelters are the gateway.
b. Basic needs.
c. Education
i. Working with Housing Works and NeighborImpact for onsite education.
ii. Empowering residents to be independent.
d. Self Sufficiency

f. Rebuilding social capital
i. Keeping clients from becoming isolated.
3. Bethlehem Inn is working with Deschutes County to create and execute a fund raising plan.

2. COVO just received $15,000.00 from Deschutes County to Hire an Executive Director.

a. They will Raffle off a 2008 Harley.

3. Summer reading program – “All about Bugs”
a. Kids get coupons to spend in the “flea market”
4. Library has 4 Passes to High Desert Museum.
a. Passes can be checked out like a book.
b. There is lots of demand for these 4 passes, so please call ahead to make sure one is available.
c. Christine mentioned that there are also grants available to take groups of kids to the museum.

3. They have two brand new babies. One boy and one girl.

3. Rental Assistance program has been re-made:

b. There are now 3 ways that renters can be assisted.
i. 1 month assistance.
ii. 2-4 month assistance.

a. They will have to reapply for the increase because they didn’t have a public hearing.
3. Ron heard an interview of a resident on the radio saying that he had been there 30 days and had not seen one violent act.

xxxix. Other Updates and discussion:
1. Chuck informed group that he was contacted by Joyce Cranston, who is opening up the old Silver Lake Retirement Facility as a facility for single women.
a. Taffy filled us in on some of the details.
i. Most of the funding is set up and ready to go.
ii. Applicants must have some form of income.
iii. They must have a job or be in job training.
iv. No Pets.
v. Facility hopes to help with child care, transportation, and training.
4. PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT
i. Please see handouts and think about your part in Project Homeless Connect.

5. 10 YEAR PLAN
i. Public Meeting:
1. 6PM on July 10, 2008 at Bend Public Library.
ii. Public launch will be at Project Homeless Connect on 10-11-08.
iii. Structure of team to work on 10 year plan:
1. Policy Committee
a. They have a letter ready to go out to elected officials for the policy group this summer.
2. Operational Group
a. Will work to form in the fall.
b. Will work closely with policy committee.
iv. Other areas are beginning to ask us for help in getting started.
